The Journey of a Richardson Mining
At Richardson Mining, every sapphire follows a carefully managed journey from discovery in the earth to its final polished form. Our mining practices combine geological knowledge, responsible extraction, and skilled craftsmanship to reveal the natural beauty of Australian sapphires while protecting the land they come from.
Prospecting
Every sapphire discovery begins with careful exploration.
Prospecting involves studying geological formations and conducting test drilling across promising areas of ground. Small samples of material are collected and processed through a sample test washer to determine whether sapphire-bearing layers are present.
By analysing these samples, our team can identify the locations most likely to produce gemstones before full mining operations begin.
This step ensures that mining is both efficient and responsible, focusing only on areas with genuine sapphire potential.
Mining the Sapphire-Bearing Ground
Once a productive area has been identified, mining operations begin.
Specialised excavation equipment removes layers of overburden to reach the sapphire-bearing gravel beneath. The material is carefully extracted and transported to the wash plant, where the gemstone-bearing gravel is separated from surrounding soil and rock.
At the wash plant, mined material is processed to separate sapphire-bearing gravel from surrounding sediment.
Water and screening systems wash the material through a series of vibrating sieves and gravity separation processes. As the lighter material is washed away, the heavier sapphire-bearing gravel remains.
This process concentrates and reveals the raw sapphire material formed naturally underground over the years, preparing it for the next stage of sorting and identification.
Sorting and Identifying Sapphires
Separating the Stones from the Earth
After sapphire-bearing gravel has been mined and washed, it is transported back to the sorting facility where the material is processed again to isolate the gemstones. This stage uses specialised equipment to progressively separate the material by size before the sapphires are identified by hand.
Step 1 — Initial Sorting Conveyor: The first stage of the sorting process begins when the washed gravel is fed into a conveyor sorting machine.
This machine slowly distributes the material along a belt where heavier sapphire-bearing stones are separated from lighter debris and directed into collection buckets. The system helps organise the material and prepare it for further processing.
At this stage the gravel still contains a mixture of stones, sapphires, and other minerals.
Step 2 — Secondary Wash & Drum Separation: The material is then passed through a rotating drum wash plant for a second processing stage.
Inside the rotating drum, water and motion work together to remove remaining dirt and clay while separating the gravel through different mesh sizes. As the drum spins, finer material falls away while larger stones continue through the system.
This step ensures the material is clean and sorted into manageable size groups before final inspection.
Step 3 — Drying & Size Sorting: After washing, the sorted gravel is placed onto drying racks where it is separated by stone size.
Allowing the material to dry makes it easier to visually identify gemstones. Each rack contains stones of a similar size, which helps streamline the final inspection process.
Final Step — Hand Picking the Sapphires: Once the stones are dry, the real treasure hunt begins. Experienced sorters carefully examine the gravel by hand, identifying sapphires among the remaining stones. The gemstones are selected based on colour, clarity, and shape.
Each sapphire is then separated and prepared for grading, cutting, or sale as rough material.
This final step combines experience, patience, and a trained eye to reveal the natural beauty hidden within the gravel.
Cutting and Shaping the Stone
Precision Cutting for the Wholesale Market: Once sapphires have been identified and graded, the stones selected for cutting are sent to skilled lapidaries where they are carefully shaped and polished into finished gemstones.
For Richardson Mining, the primary focus is the production of calibrated stones for the wholesale jewellery industry. These stones are cut to precise measurements, allowing jewellers and manufacturers to work with consistent sizes that fit standard jewellery settings.
Through careful planning and expert cutting, rough sapphires are transformed into calibrated stones in a range of shapes including emerald cut, baguette, round, oval, and cushion. This ensures reliable supply for jewellery production while maintaining the natural beauty and colour of each gemstone.
In addition to calibrated wholesale stones, Richardson Mining also produces larger individual sapphires, which are cut as unique statement gems or collector stones.
Whether supplied in calibrated parcels or as one-of-a-kind pieces, each sapphire is cut to maximise its colour, brilliance, and natural character.
Responsible Land Rehabilitation
At Richardson Mining, responsible land management is an essential part of our mining practices.
Once mining activities are complete, the land is carefully rehabilitated. Excavated areas are reshaped, soil layers are restored, and vegetation is reintroduced where possible.
This ensures the land can return to a stable, natural environment following the completion of mining operations.
